How is it to drive a husky sled?

When trying husky sledding as our guest, there is no need to be an expert with dogs – anyone can participate!

The experienced local musher will teach you a few basic things before we start, and then you just enjoy the ride. The dogs pull a sled in groups of 3-8 dogs, and guests can steer the sled by changing weight from one side to another and slow down by pushing down a break with feet. Your team of dogs will be following the guiding team running in the front, so you only need to make sure you slow down in downhills, turns and if your dog team getting too close to the team in front of you.

Is husky sledding safe?

Husky sledding is like skiing, and there is always the possibility that your sled can fall. Accidents happen very rarely, but there have been a few occasions when a guest has not used the break of the sled as instructed, and the sled has fallen in a downhill or turn. It is important that you check your travel insurance that it covers also husky sledding activities, as it is categorized as a more risky activity.

Husky program is suitable for children as well, but we recommend to book the easy 1 hr husky program with children. Pregnant women, very small children and babies are not recommended to take part on the sledding part of the program.

Send us email if you have questions about suitability and safety of husky sledding!

Are the dogs are treated well?

At the moment there is no special sustainability certificate for husky farms, so it is difficult to have actual third-party evaluation of the working conditions of the dogs. This is why we only co-operate with husky owners from local community that we know well. We prefer local, small and family-owned husky farms. This is because these huskies are very valuable for their owner and the owner actually knows all of the dogs well. We have seen their work for long time, and we know how they are quick to react if any dog has any special circumstances during a tour or for example if some dogs don´t get along and have to be trained separately.

By visiting the husky farm, we help to train the huskies for their racing competitions. Professional racing dogs are trained to go even 100 km in a day in competitions, and they have a training schedule that they follow throughout the year. Because they are professional athletes, their well-being is top priority also for the owner who races with them. You will notice how happy they are when they get to run, as running is the natural behaviour for these Alaskan Huskies. The amount of running has to be, of course, suitable for each individual´s capability, and this is carefully taken into consideration with professional racing huskies.

In our region, there is also lots of space to ride with the dogs, so you can enjoy the silent arctic nature during the ride with dogs. The mushers co-operate with local reindeer herders, so the dog teams are not disturbing the reindeer herding livelihood.
