Visit Reindeer Farm in Utsjoki

1 hour

Very easy

This short activity includes meeting home reindeer in Utsjoki and introduction to Sámi reindeer herding tradition.

Reindeer are majestic and beautiful creatures, and the source of life and continuity for the Sàmi community. They are adored by many as the helpers of Santa, but in reality, their capability to adapt to the Arctic conditions is even more magical. There are more than 10.000 reindeer in Utsjoki region and tens of reindeer farms, but for a traveler coming outside the Sàmi culture, it might be difficult to spot the reindeer or recognize the nomadic livelihood of reindeer herding in the area, as most of this work takes place deep in the wilderness area.

We welcome you on this short visit to our home reindeer farm to meet some of our reindeer and to understand more about the local reindeer herding culture and its importance to the Sámi culture!

Our normal morning feeding time of home reindeer is 9:30 in the morning, but you can also request for an afternoon/evening visit to our farm, if the morning schedule is not convenient to you. We recommend to combine this reindeer visit with our tour "Past and Present in Utsjoki village", to gain a deeper understanding about the area and its people and history.

Reindeer farm visit are available from November to early April. If you are traveling to Utsjoki in March or April, we recommend to join us on our normal working day with the reindeer on the fells: A day on the Highlands of Utsjoki with a Sámi Reindeer Herder
