Snow Safari in Paistunturi Wilderness Area (2-hour program)

2 hours

Very easy

Explore the nature and admire the stunning landscape of Paistunturi wilderness area in winter with a local guide.

Paistunturi is a large wilderness area with stunning sceneries of  taiga and tundra in Northernmost Finnish Lapland, in Utsjoki. This  area is one of the world´s oldest mountain regions. With 3 billion  years of erosion and ground movements,  the sharp mountains have  turned into gentle rolling fells, crossed by deep carved river valleys  and canyons. From the highest fell tops, you get a great view over  the entire 1500 km2 large wilderness area, as far as to the fells in Norway. The  indigenous Sámi people still practice their traditional livelihoods of  reindeer herding, hunting and fishing in this region.

On our snow  safari to Paistunturi wilderness area, you get to travel in a sled  pulled by a local guide´s snowmobile. On this tour, you get to  see the spectacular nature of the region (birds, wildlife, snow formations), but also learn why the untouched wilderness is an important cultural landscape of the Sámi and how the local culture is rooted in nature  through nature-based livelihoods.

We have planned a shorter and longer snow safari to Paistunturi  wilderness area. This is the shorter tour, about 2 hours, and includes hot  drinks and small snacks. (The longer tour is about 4 hours, and we  drive deeper into the wilderness area and enjoy a wilderness lunch  at a wilderness hut. You can reserve the longer snow safari via email at arctic@travelutsjoki.com or directly from our webstore.) All tours include pick-up max 5 km from Utsjoki  village, extra winter clothes and helmets.
