Polar Husky Excursion
Polar Husky Excursion is for guests looking for truly immersive and informative, full day husky experience in the wilderness.
Husky sledding is originally from Siberian and Inuit regions, but has spread as a sport and tourism attraction to other regions with cold climate as well. If you want a husky experience in the gorgeous arctic scenery without mass tourism, then our husky programs are a perfect fit!
We will pick you up from your accommodation in Utsjoki or Nuorgam, provide extra winter gear, and take you to a small, private husky farm (transfer is about 1,5 hours). An experienced local musher (husky trainer) will meet you at his home farm. On this experience, you are not only driving a short round, but you actually learn how to prepare the dogs and team them for a full day sledding excursion. When the teams are ready and the musher has given you all necessary instructions for safety and how to use the sled, we start a full day expedition with our furry team into the snowy wilderness. We drive actively 30-40 km in the silent landscapes, stopping for short breaks and for wilderness lunch. All the time you will be instructed how to take care of your team of dogs. After the day, we return to the farm and help to feed our teams and make sure they are comfortable in their little huts.
The guide will drive you back to your hotel for the night, and you are sure to go to bed tired but happy, with some new memories to keep for a lifetime.
When trying husky sledding as our guest, there is no need to be an expert with dogs – anyone can participate. But it is important to know that the dog sledding is like skiing: you can fall and you can get injured. This is rare, but it can happen if the driver does not control the speed as instructed. Listening to the safety instructions in the beginning is very important. For this full day polar husky excursion, you need to have a basic fitness level, as you will be helping your team of dogs during uphill to get forward. We recommend this full day program only to older juveniles and adults with a basic fitness level and no asthma, heart conditions or mobility restrictions, as it will be physically challenging in some parts.
Please notice that husky tours are booked "On request", meaning that after you book via webstore, we will confirm your booking within three days. You can also send us email if you want to book via email or on other dates that are on our booking calendar!
If you are worried about driving a dog sled, you are pregnant or you have children in your group, we recommend to book the shorter, 1-hour husky farm visit, where you can try driving the sled only on flat fields, or the 3 hours husky program with 10-15 km of dog sledding. If you are insecure about which husky program to choose, you can always send us email at arctic@travelutsjoki.com!
You can also send us email to request multiday husky tours, these can also be arranged!
