Guided full-day hikes to the Arctic Highlands of Utsjoki

10 hours

Moderate

A full-day guided hike in Paistunturi wilderness area, for guests wanting to explore deeper into the wild.

Paistunturi and Kaldoaivi Wilderness areas in Utsjoki are the largest  wilderness areas in Finland. They are protected nature reserves, with  almost no human-built roads or structures, but here the indigenous  Sàmi people still actively practice their traditional livelihoods of  reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. An experienced local guide is  a must-have when exploring outside marked trails, to take care of  your safety and to give a deeper understanding of the local culture,  geology and nature. In Utsjoki wilderness, it is more likely to meet  reindeer and other wildlife than any people. If you want to  experience the famous mosquitoes of Lapland in early July, we can  take you to wetland areas to find them. Otherwise we select routes  on the tundra where we won´t be disturbed by hungry insects.

We have planned day hikes for all types of guests, and this hike is for guests wanting to explore deep into the wilderness area and who are in good physical condition. We start early in the morning and will return in the evening. Our full day hikes are of varying length between 10-25 km, and we plan the  route according to group´s wishes. We can find some hidden waterfalls in the wilderness area, walk to the highest fell tops around, explore a palsa moss area or go see the thousand year old juniper by a gorgeous river valley. On all our hiking tours, we will see lots of arctic wildlife, but we will observe them from a distance to avoid disturbing the nature of the wilderness area.

Utsjoki is a unique destination with the arctic highlands and river  valleys, and gorgeous colors of the silent nature. Paistunturi and  Kaldoaivi wilderness areas have endless trails and breathtakingly  beautiful landscapes to explore!
